Comprehensive Evaluation Method for Pressure Pulsation of Variable Speed Pumped Storage Units

In the case of a large number of intermittent new energy sources such as solar and wind energy being connected to the power grid for operation, pumped storage technology as a large capacity energy storage is the most economical means to solve the problem of peak shaving and frequency regulation in the power system. The doubly fed variable speed pumped storage unit has the characteristic of adjustable pumping power, and has more technical advantages in terms of unit performance and hydraulic characteristics. However, there are currently no operational doubly fed variable speed pumped storage units in China, and their hydraulic performance is not yet clear. This article constructs an evaluation method for pressure pulsation intensity of pumped storage units under variable speed operation, and explores whether it is possible to reduce pressure pulsation of pump turbines through variable speed operation. By evaluating the pressure pulsation of variable speed pumped storage units under different operating conditions and transition processes, the law of pressure pulsation can be studied, reasonable operating strategies can be formulated, and the restricted range of variable speed operation of the unit can be avoided.
