Analysis of Power Frequency Electromagnetic Field in Outdoor AIS and Indoor GIS Substations

The burgeoning economic and societal demands for electricity in China have spurred the continuous growth of quantity and voltage levels of substations. Consequently, there is an increasing focus on the electromagnetic environment surrounding these substations. Ansys Maxwell, the finite element analysis software, was used to model and simulate the industrial frequency electromagnetic field distribution in 110kV outdoor air-insulated substations (AIS) and indoor gas-insulated substations (GIS). The simulation results affirm that power frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) values of both substations at 1.5 m above the ground meet national controlling limits. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the maximum EMF value in the indoor substation is only 1/10 of that observed in the outdoor substation. This finding underscores the significant role played by GIS in mitigating EMF levels in substations. Consequently, it is suggested that GIS technology be widely adopted in substations located in densely populated areas, such as cities.
