Comparative Study on Breakdown Voltage Phenomenon in Air Insulated System with and Without Spacers

In electrical power systems, high-voltage power equipment is particularly susceptible to breakdown voltage, which can be caused by various factors including lightning strokes. Understanding the breakdown voltage of different insulation materials is crucial for determining the necessary clearance for ensuring adequate insulation levels and preventing equipment failure. To address this issue in HV power equipment, the plane-plane, sphere-plane and rod-plane gap methods are commonly employed as standard testing methods. These methods offer a balance between simplicity and acceptable accuracy. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of breakdown voltage on solid insulation materials such as Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and nylon.
