Advanced Shielding To Suppress Magnetic Field Emission For Improved Hardware Performance

Multilayered stacks of conducting and magnetic films are investigated as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shields to suppress noise in power electronic packages. Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and nickel are used to represent the two systems. Four layers of GNP- Ni of 4 µm, each layer of 1 µmthickness, provide shielding effectiveness (SE) of 8–53 dB based on the NSA 65–6 standard across 1–100 MHz. The same stack design shows a SE of 45–80 dB based on the IEEE 299 standards at the same frequency range. The proposed four-layer EMI shield is a suitable implementation in the power inductors to mitigate their unintended magnetic field. Also, a monolithic GNP shield can be implemented between the switching element and the heat sink. Thus, parasitic capacitance effects can be reduced, particularly the common mode radiation. Furthermore, this approach mitigates the hot spots due to the GNP's higher thermal conductivity.
