Forensic Analysis and Coil Dissection of Mobile Generator Failure

Forensic analysis of medium voltage locomotive traction generators involves the dissection of stator form coils and rotor field coils. In this paper the analysis of two locomotive traction generators one with grounded stator and one with grounded and shorted rotor coils including coil dissection is discussed. Techniques for coil removal and inspections for preserving evidence of the root cause are described. Prospective findings related to improper operation, construction and maintenance were investigated.
