A more appropriate testing method for the characterization of dielectric systems in power modules

The goal of this work is to ascertain the implications of testing procedures on dielectric strength and Partial Discharge Inception Voltage (PDIV) across a range of organic materials. This comparative analysis seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how dielectrics perform under conditions that closely mimic their actual usage, thus ensuring a more accurate assessment of their suitability for power module applications. Testing with unipolar voltages allows to safely apply higher voltages without breaking down the material. Relationship between PDIV and amount and type of charge accumulated is also investigated. In fact, the most relevant for PDIV is the Field Enhancement Factor (FEF). By aligning dielectric testing procedures more closely with real-world operational conditions, engineers can make informed decisions about the selection and optimization of materials for enhanced performance, reliability, and longevity of power modules.
