Design and Evaluation of a Real-Time Gesture controlled Television

Gestures are used for non-verbal or non-vocal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages. Gesture recognition has now evolved into a pivotal technology with profound real-life implications, transcending novelty to provide intuitive control interfaces, adaptable to diverse applications ranging from controlling consumer electronics to controlling on-board systems in space station. In this paper, design and development of a real-time hand gesture controlled television is proposed. A total of seventeen gestures are used for the proposed work and it can be either increased or decreased, based on the consumer appliance or application requirement. Maximum recognition accuracy of 100% is achieved with an average recognition time of 2.18ms. The proposed work can be easily extended to various other applications including consumer appliances such as washing machine, refrigerators, dishwasher, air-conditioners, etc.
