High aspect ratio novel ceramic filler composites with nonlinear current voltage characteristics for power applications

High aspect ratio Na – Co oxide ceramic filler – polymer composites with unique dielectric and electrical properties are potentially promising materials for power applications due to their high dielectric permittivity, low dielectric loss tangent values, and reversible non-linear dielectric properties under an applied electric field. This research utilizes novel ceramic platelets as the varistor filler component, introducing a new class of materials to electrical stress control technology. By minimizing the amount of varistor filler material required (< 15 wt.%), it is possible to develop lightweight non-linear dielectric composites that not only exhibit improved electrical characteristics but also make processing easier and more cost effective. This is a significant advantage, as it ensures that the resulting composites maintain their structural integrity and durability while effectively managing electrical stress and opening up new design space. These composites exhibit novel dielectric and electrical characteristics, which can be utilized in a variety of industrial electrical applications, such as electrical stress control accessories, e.g., terminations and splices.
