Integration of Computational Techniques in the Teaching of Physics of Electronic Devices: A Practical and Applied Perspective

For a long time, theoretical classes have been the fundamental element of teaching in Physics of Electronic Devices courses. These classes focus on general principles and physical laws that govern device behavior, such as band theory and electrical current models, in relation to device parameters. However, a significant change has been introduced in the educational approach, incorporating computational techniques, particularly the finite element method, for the design and analysis of electronic devices such as diodes, transistors, and other components. This change introduced to the Physics of Electronic Devices program offers students a unique opportunity to more realistically understand the behavior of devices based on their geometric and structural characteristics and the environment in which they operate. Students can now model devices such as the diode, Schottky diode, and MOSFET using finite element software, applying the physical laws that govern the dynamics of carriers, such as the Poisson equation, carrier transport equations, and the continuity equation. This more practical and applied approach allows students to acquire skills highly in demand in the semiconductor industry, where similar programs are used in the design of new devices. Additionally, assessment strategies will be implemented to measure and improve learning outcomes in this new educational approach. Continuous evaluation will be essential to adapt and refine the program.
