Satellite-Based Two-Way Position Validation

This paper proposes two techniques for validating the position of a non-trusted user by means of a satellite constellation. They are based on a combination of round-trip time (RTT), time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA) principles to confirm or reject the user position in a way that is robust both to third-party attacks and attempts of the user to report a false position. Simulations show reliable detection of fraudulent users with the proposed techniques operating on noisy measurements. The proposed solution enhances the availability and security of current asset tracking solutions. Upcoming satellite navigation constellations in low Earth orbit (LEO) featuring two-way links could be a suitable platform to implement the proposed techniques catering to fast-growing use cases such as road user charging, high-value item tracking, geofencing applications, electronic offender tracking, and fishery vessel monitoring.
