Enhancing Cybersecurity of a Hydroelectric Power Plant Using Its Digital Twin Model

Hydroelectric power plants have a significant share in electricity production and stand out among sustainable energy sources. However, cyber security vulnerabilities of these power plants can lead to potentially serious consequences. Cybersecurity tests are critical to identifying and resolving these vulnerabilities. Although tests performed in real environments provide more realistic results, they are risky and costly. Therefore, tests performed in virtual environments are safer and more economical. However, virtual environments may not fully reflect all the dynamics of the real environment. In this context, digital twin models allow cybersecurity tests to be carried out in conditions similar to the real environment, contributing to the strengthening of cyber security measures by evaluating the effects of cyber-attacks. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a digital twin model for a real hydroelectric power plant located in Türkiye, with the aim of enhancing its cybersecurity defenses and conducting comprehensive security tests. Thus, the utilization of digital twin model represents a proactive approach to addressing cybersecurity concerns of the plant.
