Design of mu-PD Glucose Regulation for Type I Diabetes Mellitus

Type I diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune condition impacting a large part of the population world-wide that needs a daily infusion of insulin substitutes to regulate blood glucose levels within healthy limits. The purpose of the present study is to design a robust mu-controller with predefined structure of proportional differential (PD) regulator to impose a feedback action over the naive basal and bolus scheduled infusions. The controller design is based on an uncertain linear-time invariant (LTI) representation of the Hovorka model for glucose–insulin metabolism. The Hovorka model is linearized for a predefined operating point, and the time constant of insulin sensitivity is assumed to be uncertain. The robust stability of the closed loop system with the mu-PD controller is demonstrated.
