XCP2: An XCP-Proxy Server for Concurrent Multinode XCP Access

Intensive testing of vehicles under real-life conditions is an important part of automotive development, especially for electrical/electronic (E/E) components. For the stage of generic parameter calibration, the Association for Standardization of Automation and Measuring Systems (ASAM) Measurement Calibration and Diagnosis (MCD) suite has established itself as a proprietary standard in the automotive industry. Nevertheless, the topology of the Extended Calibration Protocol (XCP) communication standard forbids parallel calibration and measurement from more than one master at a time. Concurrent calibration could be possible due to the many independent functions integrated on electronic control units (ECUs). This work uses a proxy concept to outline how a multi-master topology can be virtually created. As an additional benefit, we propose caching of already received signal values to reduce latency for additional clients by up to 50 percent and address the limited bandwidth of the interfaces. Lastly, a proof of concept was implemented and evaluated based on time and resource constraints. This prototype opens up future adoption in the industry.
