Mobile Proxy in Public WiFi Networks: A Tool Against MITM Attacks

Public WiFi networks are highly vulnerable to cyberattacks. Man-in-the-middle attack (MITM) can do great damage to data-sensitive (e.g., business) users. This research explores the application of VPN and a mobile Raspberry Pi platform for protection against MITM in public WiFi networks. The evaluation is based on the Common Vulnerability Score System (CVSS), which uses the network vulnerabilities as inputs, and produces the numerical scores to quantify the severity of the attacks. As compared to the ordinary VPN setups, results show that the VPN on a mobile WiFi proxy can significantly improve the end-user’s data privacy and security.
