A Comparative Study Between Permanent-Magnet-Free Reluctance Machines for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles

This paper introduces permanent-magnet-free electrical drive solutions designed for the traction of a heavy-duty vehicle. The vehicle features a maximum continuous torque of 200 Nm and a nominal speed of 1600 rpm. The torque production, efficiency, and thermal characteristics of the designed variable flux reluctance machine are presented. Furthermore, two additional frequently utilized reluctance machine configurations, namely switched reluctance and synchronous reluctance machines, are explored for potential application in the same heavy-duty context. A comprehensive comparison is undertaken for three electrical drive options, assessing factors including torque generation, efficiency, power factor, and thermal characteristics. The examination covers both constant-torque and flux-weakening operations.
