The Potential of SmCo4B-Based Compounds as a Permanent Magnet

The SmCo4B-based magnets are of interest as they exhibit extremely high anisotropic field (~65 T), thus having a significant potential for high coercivity (~up to 20 T). However, their use in practical applications is limited due to low saturation. To tackle this, we substitute Sm and Co with N d and Fe, respectively. In this work, the intrinsic magnetic properties of SmCo4B, SmCo3.sFeo.2B, and Smo.7Ndo.3Co3.sFeo.2B are investigated by using PPMS up to 14 T, vertical single coil turn up to 100 T, and non-destructive pulse coil up to 60 T to understand their potential in permanent magnet applications. The magnetization increases from 0.35 T for SmCo4B to 0.55 T for SmN dCoFeB, with a decrement in the anisotropy field to 35 T at 300 K. These results demonstrate a potential as permanent magnets for substituted SmCo4B-based magnets.
