Numerical Simulation and Performance Assessment of a 100 MW (PTC) Solar Thermal Power Plant in Algerian Regions

Algeria is strategically located to harness solar energy for electricity generation due to its extensive desert regions and intense solar radiation, both of which contribute to the country's favorable geographical composition. This paper presents the methodology for designing, analyzing, and optimizing a solar power plant, with a parabolic trough collector, capable of generating 100 megawatts of electricity. The facility is outfitted with thermal energy storage and is specifically engineered for use in Algeria. The study examines three specific locations in Algeria, each providing an average yearly direct normal irradiance (DNI). The primary objective of this research is to construct a strong model. that accurately represents the complexities of the 100 MW CSP solar thermal power plant and to carry out a thorough performance simulation. The plant will be situated in three representative sites that demonstrate typical climate conditions found in Algeria: Adrar, Ghardia, and Hassi Messaoud. NREL's SAM program, is employed to evaluate energetic, economic characteristics of a facility, encompassing its power generation, monthly energy generation, annual energy production.
