Image-Based Analysis Technique for Droplet-Based Microfluidics

Droplet-based microfluidics has proven to be a promising technology platform for conducting chemical and biological experiments with ultrasmall volumes (order of nanoliter). In this article, we presented an image processing-based method for the analytical detection of the droplet in the generation system. These droplets are obtained using numerical simulations with T-junction based microfluidic with boundary conditions of a velocity ratio of 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 30, respectively, and a viscosity of 0.00671 (Pa.s) for the dispersed phase and 0.001003 (Pa.s) for the continuous phase. The obtained results show that the relationship between velocity and viscosity ratios, droplet size, and generation rate is nonmonotonic, and indicates that the proposed method has 100% accuracy for droplet counting and size determination using image analysis techniques.
