A Real-Time Noise Detector for Patient Monitoring at Hospital Wards

Noise pollution in healthcare ward environments poses a significant concern, affecting patient health and well-being. Traditional methods of monitoring and managing noise, such as limited rounds and CCTV observation, prove ineffective in providing optimal patient care. This issue becomes particularly critical for patients recovering from major surgeries, as excessive noise can lead to discomfort, mental distress, and potential health complications. To reduce the noise, there is a need to adopt various technologies that can monitor the noise and reduce it. In response, this paper aims to develop a real time noise monitoring system using loT devices to monitor real-time noise in hospital wards. This system can identify sources and alert user when it exceeds the standard level. A case study is carried out to ascertain the noise pollution at one public hospital in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Establishing the average decibel is crucial to determining the appropriate levels, as recommended by the Worldwide Health Organization (WHO), for the patient's stay, health, and the safety of the medical staff. This project can effectively demonstrate the purpose of advocating for sustainable development goals, particularly in the areas of health and wellbeing.
