Investigation and design of a MIMO ROFSO system using WDM for the purpose of 5G applications

The Radio over Free-Space Optics (ROFSO) communication system proves its worth in situations where optical fibers are not feasible, such as in rural areas, enabling the efficient delivery of wireless services. The increasing demand for broadband communication is motivated by the integration of Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology into Free-Space Optics (FSO). This innovative approach revolutionizes the system by amplifying data capacity by seamlessly adding extra channels and reducing channel spacing. This work concentrates on a WDM-RoFSO system. It proposes an 8-channel WDM-based RoFSO system whose performance is evaluated under three distinct weather scenarios: clear skies, heavy rain, and dense fog. These conditions have respective attenuation losses of 0.43 dB/km, 9.29 dB/km, and 113.2 dB/km. The recommended communication system for WDM-RoFSO uses the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) channel technique to improve performance.
