BIER-Based Multicast Routing for Low-Power and Lossy Networks

In scenarios involving point-to-multipoint network traffic, IP multicast protocols facilitate the routing of packets from a single source to multiple destinations in a single transmission. This approach conserves valuable resources such as bandwidth, energy, and time, making it ideal for a variety of Low-power and Lossy Network (LLN) applications. These applications range from over-the-air programming and information sharing to device configuration and resource discovery. Given the constrained nature of LLN networks, there is an increased demand for efficient communication protocols. To address these demands, this paper proposes a Bit-Indexed Explicit Replication (BIER) based approach to multicast packet routing within LLNs. A series of simulations using the Cooja simulator were conducted to evaluate the performance of our proposal. The obtained results confirm the viability of the proposed approach for implementing multicasting in LLNs.
