Optimal sizing of microcrack surface-breaking using PoD and ECNDT techniques

The objective of the paper is to propose a methodology using eddy current nondestructive testing (ECNDT) tools to get as accurate as technically feasible, flaw dimensions to plot the probability of detection (POD) curves. In eddy current nondestructive testing the usual method of presenting the information is in the form of impedance or impedance change diagrams. In this article, a FEM method is applied for multifrequency and pulsed eddy current testing of a JSAEM#6 benchmark. An experimental eddy current testing system combined with a scanner is established and scanning testing experiments are carried out. The simulation and experimental results are compared. Due to the fact that NDT methods will be applied to quantify flaw size (horizontal axis of the POD curve), it is essential to ensure that the methodology described hereafter is independent of the procedure being qualified.
