Modelling a Three-Phase to Single-Phase AC-AC Matrix Converter

Matrix converters have drawn interest from many researchers in recent years because of their uniqueness. Power can flow in both directions. The storage capacitor is not required since this topology is a direct AC-AC conversion. In this topology, three-phase voltages are switched directly to a single-phase load which the output voltage waveshape is a piecewise construction of the output voltage across the load. One major drawback in this topology is the over-voltage that occur whenever the switch across the load is turned off which is inductive. This research paper aims to address the impact of the switching frequency on the output voltage waveshape across the load in an AC-AC matrix Converter. This was achieved by modeling a three-phase input voltage, the switching signals, and the output voltage waveshape. The simulation of the switching patterns, the three-phase input voltages and single-phase output voltages accomplished using python programming language and by applying the switching signals to the three-phase input voltages various waveshapes were analyzed. The analysis revealed interesting results in different ranges and at different specific frequencies. As a frequency changer, the converter has its own challenges, features and limitations however, this paper presents an improved view.
