Exploiting the Full Potential of Full-Duplex Communication through Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) is a cutting-edge hardware innovation that holds tremendous capacity towards energy-efficient green communication, one of the key features of 6G communication. IRS is a reconfigurable grid of passive reflecting elements (meta-atoms) that turns the probabilistic wireless environment into deterministic space by manipulating the EM waves towards the intended user. IRS-assisted full-duplex communication can be used to confront the barrier of self-interference that exits between transmitter and receiver antennas thereby improving the performance in terms of SINR. Each element in IRS will adjust the phase and reflection amplitude of the incident wave by constructively focusing on the reflected signal. However, the intensity of the reflected signal varies in a non-linear way with a shift in its phase, which is considered to evaluate the performance via SINR by leveraging IRS in FD. The channels adhere to follow Rayleigh fading. There can be seen an improved performance compared to linear coupling, through MATLAB simulation results.
