A Measurement-based Model for Generating Household Power Load Profiles

Residential load modeling is challenge due to its high complexity. However, it serves as a foundation for related studies, such as the control strategy of microgrid, vehicle-to-grid simulation, and second-use of electrical vehicle batteries. The residential load profile is determined by multiple power consuming activities. The power consumption of each activity depends on several decisive factors including start time, duration, power level, and occurrence probability. This paper presents a stochastic method to synthesize the power loads of major home activities. Moreover, a simplified formula is proposed to compute the load of heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) system. This model’s parameters can be identified with measurements through a multiple-stage approach, therefore it can accurately describe the load profile of a single household or a residential sector. In addition to the model’s design, the parameter identification method and steps are introduced, where the objective function and ant colony optimization (ACO) operators are designed in detail. At last, the actual data of 110 households is utilized to verify the proposed work. Furthermore, with the identified parameters, the model is then employed to evaluate the profitability for household energy storage schemes.
