Optimizing 360-degree Video Streaming: A Hybrid Tile-Based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Approach

The emergence of 360-degree panoramic videos presents novel challenges in efficient streaming, demanding innovative solutions to enhance user experience and overcome bandwidth limitations. Existing tile-based streaming methods rely on fixed-size tile solutions, struggling to strike a balance between video encoding efficiency and Field of View (FoV) coverage. In response, this paper introduces the Hybrid Tile-Based Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (HTDAS), a novel approach aimed at optimizing 360-degree video streaming. The core contribution of HTDAS lies in partitioning the user's viewing area into priority-based regions, designing a fused tile layout for different priority levels, and developing a new Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) algorithm based on this layout. Performance evaluation reveals that the HTDAS solution significantly reduces bandwidth usage and enhances QoE for 360-degree video streaming under various network conditions, showcasing improvements ranging from 8.9% to 26.9%. In conclusion, this research contributes to the ongoing development of adaptive streaming technologies, offering a promising foundation for personalized and immersive video experiences.
