with increased penetration of switching power converters, non-linear loads highly affect the power quality at grid side with high harmonic injection and reactive power absorption. Across various solutions, Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) provides high compensation with no additional side effect. However, the operation of SAPF is significantly related to control system and harmonic current generation. In this paper, a new Sliding Mode Control (SMC) - Based Direct Power Control (DPC) is proposed to control the SAPF. The proposed method is highly compatible with p-q harmonic detection method while provides rapid dynamic response as well as strong robustness against model uncertainties and model parameter mismatches. Several experimental results endorse the superior performance of the recommended method in which the current harmonic THD% is reduced from 20% to 4% with fully reactive power compensation at grid side.
