A novel self-adaptive control for frequency stabilization in energy storage system with high penetration of renewable resources

Utilizing high penetrated renewable energy resources in microgrid systems, maintaining frequency stability is a major challenge. Hence, virtual inertia and damping control-based energy storage systems would help microgrids overcome this difficulty. Nonetheless, in these systems, the virtual inertia and damping remains constant, and the choice of its value will have a substantial impact on the frequency stability of microgrids operating at varying RESs penetration levels. The fixed virtual inertia and damping parameters or improper choice of its value may result in oscillations at higher frequencies. For these reasons, this paper presents a novel three loop self-adaptive control approach for virtual inertia and damping control which are the first and second control loops while the third loop that uses the integrated frequency deviation in order to improve the overall performance, the Fuzzy Logic is also used to optimize the parameters. Performance of the proposed approach is proved in comparison in two different scenarios with RESs penetration variation using MATLAB/Simulink 2021b.
