Decidated bus lanes and the attractiveness of public transport

We examine the effects of the improvement of public transport based on dedicated bus lanes, optimized (i) frequencies and (ii) spacing between the stations. We find that dedicated bus lanes yield the most important impacts when congestion is high, which is the case in most metropolitan areas. Our analysis is based on micro-simulation and produces a complete spatial accounting of traffic flows, the levels of emissions greenhouse gases and fine particulates.
