Leveraging the Rate of Change of Active Power for Enhanced Event Identification

In this paper we explore a novel approach for event detection in power system operation using the rate of change of active power. The measurement information is provided with high reporting rate by the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). Leveraging on the power flow variability made available by synchronized measurements, the proposed methodology relies on statistical metrics computed against steady-state adopted models and anticipated active power variations within specified time windows.
