Energy optimization approach for the Single-Row Facility Layout Problem

This study delves into the critical realm of facility layout optimization, focusing on minimizing costs associated with interactions between facilities. It extends this optimization to reduce energy consumption (EC) during material movements, crucial for environmental protection and sustainable development. The Single-Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP) is explored as a specialized instance of the Facility Layout Problem (FLP), with applications across industries like manufacturing, hospitals, and supermarkets. The study employs a Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) to model the SRFLP, incorporating EC and position constraints. Through practical examples and the use of the CPLEX Studio IDE 22.1.1 solver, the research demonstrates the effectiveness of the mathematical model in optimizing facility layouts to minimize handling cost and EC. The article contributes to advancing mathematical modeling techniques for facility layout optimization and showcases practical applications in real-world scenarios, emphasizing the importance of energy-efficient facility arrangements for operational efficiency and sustainability.
