The local household travel survey: A look into the travel patterns of Sfax city

the rapid development of the urban fabric in the world has resulted in increasingly important travel behavior and mobility needs. The rapid growth in travel demand and the saturation of transport networks have been the cause of the deterioration of traffic conditions in several towns, which is explained by the lack of reliable and precise knowledge on the passenger movement. The household travel survey is a tool widely used around the world to study the travel behavior in an urban area and to make an adequate decision on the travel system. This article presents an analytical work based on a travel survey in the city Sfax. The survey provides a useful picture of travel and it is used in particular to assess the proportion of different travel modes and their evolution over time. The results show that the car remains the preferred mode of transport by the inhabitants of Sfax, with a considerable degradation of public transport service.
