Investigating Unsafe Behaviors of Vehicles at Non-Signalized Intersections Based on Trajectory Data

Unsafe behaviors at intersections have emerged as a primary contributor to traffic accidents and fatalities. This study investigates conflicts involving two-wheel vehicles using a near-crash identification method alongside the post-encroachment time (PET) indicator. A case study conducted on a university campus in Shanghai revealed that unsafe behaviors, such as failure to yield, were prevalent at intersection entrances, where a higher proportion of conflicts occurred. Traffic-related statistics and Chi-Square tests indicated that a significant portion of road users involved in conflicts did not yield. These findings highlight the critical need for intersection-specific traffic safety countermeasures, focusing on education, engineering, and law enforcement. Moreover, leveraging video data with vision-based methodologies can enhance safety management across various transportation scenarios, providing valuable insights into unsafe behaviors and informing risk analysis and management strategies.
