Threefold CO2 Removal for a Cleaner Tomorrow

In response to the ever-growing threat of climate change driven by human activities, this study presents a modular approach to carbon capture, targeting community-level implementation. Multiple promising methods are explored throughout the paper but ultimately were unattainable for the paper's research such as sequestration through concrete and oysters, bamboo, algae, and shellfish. Through a combination of methods including a liquid metal catalyst reaction, biochar production, and basalt dust mineralization, the aim is to remove 100 tons of CO
2
from the atmosphere annually. To reach the removal goal, around five modules would need to be implemented throughout the nation. The liquid-metal catalyst reaction is an incredible demonstration to help educate the public and would capture less than one ton annually. For the biochar portion of the study, a pyrolysis oven was used to generate biochar using leaves, sticks, grass, etc. by reducing oxygen and using high temperatures to convert the biogenic carbon to biochar. The calculations show that if there were approximately 30 trees per acre in a 10.5-acre park, 13.9 tons of CO
2
would be captured. The basalt portion of the study uses basalt dust to remove CO
2
from the atmosphere. Each module will use two tons of basalt over five acres to remove 7.42 tons of CO
2
annually.
