An Immersive Solution to Enhance Nursing Student Skills of Intradermal Injection on New-born

The nursing profession requires a great deal of competency and continuous training for quality patient care. Thus, challenges identified in a School of Nursing at a South African University, which include limited opportunities in clinical practice and the theory-practice gap, cannot be overlooked. Therefore, this work developed an augmented reality (AR) application solution coined IntradARmal. The application aims to enhance nursing students' knowledge and skills in the administration of intradermal injection in a newborn. Using the Unity platform, 3Ds Max, Visual Studio, and 3D models, the application demonstrates the identification of the correct injection site, injection technique, and the required procedure to follow during the administration of an intradermal injection, with key features such as AR mode, Quizzes, and animation. Agile scrum methodology was used during development due to its adaptability and relevance. Feedback from Nurse educators at the institution reveals that the IntradARmal application has the potential to improve healthcare quality by strengthening nursing students' capabilities, filling the gaps in their practical training, and boosting their competence in providing medical services.
