Trends and Challenges in Implementing IoT Green Transformation Concepts in Engineering Curricula

With the rapid development of technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have become an integrated and daily part of our lives. Green transformation, a related concept, has also become an essential consideration when developing new technologies. Introduction of these concepts as early on as possible in the engineering degree curricula is therefore inevitable. To understand the level of students’ readiness for introduction to IoT and Green Transformation concepts, we have performed a qualitative survey with electrical engineering students at undergraduate and gradate level. The goal of the survey was to assess the level of implementation of these technologies in learning and teaching process, as well as identify main challenges in the implementation. The method used in this research is direct questioning composed of closed and open-end questions. The results of the survey show that most of the students have some basic knowledge regarding IoT and Green transformation, but are not familiar with advanced concepts. Students largely agree that such concepts are important for their future, and should become more present in the study curricula. Lack of infrastructure and specialized training were identified as main challenges.
