Improving Digital Equality: The Potential of Data-Free Super Applications

This case study investigates the impact of data-free super applications, focusing on the South African app, Moya, in addressing digital inequality. Utilizing a case study methodology, the research explores Moya's role in enhancing information access, financial inclusion, healthcare, and education in a region marked by pronounced digital disparities. As exemplified by Moya, Data-Free Super Apps revolutionize mobile applications by providing versatile services without consuming substantial data. A total of 597 application reviews were collected from the Google Play Store on 23 April 2023. Google reviews were analysed using thematic analysis and Atlas.ti software. Overall, results indicate that most users were satisfied with using the super app and gave it positive feedback. Users felt gratitude and satisfaction for the improved access to education and job opportunities, digital financial inclusion, and enhanced health and well-being. However, many users have highlighted frustration with using the super app and this is also linked to technical issues. A negligible number of users mentioned technology risks. The case study highlights the potential of data-free super apps in promoting inclusivity and bridging gaps in access to essential services, emphasizing their role in fostering a more equitable society.
