Stability Analysis of Grid-Connected Wind Power Systems Based on SiC Devices

The sub/super-synchronous oscillation (SSO) issues of grid-connected wind power systems under weak grid conditions have emerged as a significant technical challenge. While SSOs in grid-connected wind power systems have been extensively studies in recent years, these studies are all based on silicon (Si) IGBT-based converters. With the recent commercialization and maturity of silicon carbide (SiC) devices, it is now feasible to utilize SiC devices in wind power converters in the near future. Compared to Si devices, SiC devices possess unique advantages such as high switching frequency and low power losses, which can be leveraged to improve the control performance and mitigate the risk of the SSOs in grid-connected wind power systems. To this end, this paper comparatively analyzes the small-signal stability of Si and SiC device-based grid-connected wind power systems under weak grids. The study results indicate that the SiC device-based wind power system allows for a wider control bandwidth, which is beneficial for mitigating SSOs in weak grid-connected wind power systems.
