A Cell-to-cell Voltage Balancing Strategy with Bidirectional Flyback Converter

cell-to-cell (C2C) voltage balancing strategy with a bidirectional flyback converter is proposed in this paper. The primary side of the bidirectional flyback converter is connected in parallel with the battery pack, whereas the secondary side is associated with each individual cell. The proposed strategy controls the discharging of the cell with the maximum voltage and charges the cell with the minimum voltage simultaneously, the energy can be directly transferred between these two cells which reduces the time required for balancing. Since all modules employ the same structure, it is simple to expand into a system with multiple battery cells. A C2C voltage balancing prototype is designed and built to verify the validity of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed strategy could achieve C2C voltage balancing rapidly and effectively.
