Mismatched Synchronization Effect of High-Power Pulsed Laser Systems with Multiple Power Supplies

High-power pulsed laser systems consist of multiple pump sources, which requires multiple pulsed power supplies (PPSs). All power supplies need to be triggered simultaneously to obtain high-energy pulsed lasers. To improve system configuration flexibility, distributed control scheme is preferred, where PPSs are triggered utilizing a series synchronization structure one-by-one with each other. However, synchronization mismatch among PPSs seriously affects the electro-optical conversion efficiency. To deal with the challenge, this paper first introduces the developed PPS including both charging and pulse forming network (PFN). Based on that, the synchronization mismatching effect of a PPS is inspected. A solution to reduce the mismatching effect with an improved synchronization circuit is proposed. Experiments are conducted with a developed pulsed laser system including 8 PPSs to verify the analyses.
