Model Predictive Control Strategy for High-Power Wind Turbine based on Paralleled Active Neutral Point Clamped Converter

Offshore wind power is promoting high-power wind turbine development, which undoubtedly presents novel technical challenges. The type 4 PMSG-based wind turbine is well-suited for offshore applications, where the ANPC power converter is an attractive solution to perform high-power operation. The FCS-MPC is a promising control method for high-power applications, offering superior dynamic response and remarkable performance at low switching frequencies. However, industrial standardization of FCS-MPC remains limited, requiring further practical validation. This paper investigates the integration of FCS- MPC within the grid-side controller of a 14MW wind turbine comprising two paralleled ANPC conversion lines. The study addresses real-time implementation challenges, such as delay compensation and efficient execution of FCS-MPC algorithm. Hardware-in-the-Loop testing is performed to verify the proposed control strategy and assess operational performance of the power conversion solution. The findings provide valuable insights for the practical application of FCS-MPC in the context of high-power wind turbines.
