A Simple, Load-Independent, All Solid-State Marx Generator Topology with Minimal Controls

Solid-state Marx generators (SSMGs) are high-voltage pulse generators that find applications in a multitude of fields. In this paper, a simple, enhanced, load-independent pulse generator architecture - using a minimal number of controls - is presented; it is superior to published SSMG topologies from simplicity and controllability points of view. As proof of concept, the proposed circuit is used to build a 4-stage SSMG capable of producing impulses with a peak voltage of 100V across a 250–Ω load. Circuit simulation is performed using LTspice. Experimental results follow closely the simulation results; this validates the enhanced topology proposed design. Although the presented example produces only a 100V peak, it can be easily extended to higher peak voltages as large as the breakdown voltage of the available MOSFET switches.
