Control of Power Reserves at Wind Farms with Availability for Inertia, Primary and Secondary Power Supply and Thrust Force Reduction

The transformation of the European grid from conventional power plants to climate neutrality, leads to an in-crease of regenerative energy sources and to a power converter dominated grid. Grid services like the supply of inertia, primary and secondary power must be delivered by renewable energies and accumulators, whereby wind farms have a central role due to its high contribution to power supply. Despite this, the adjustment of power reserves and their provision in the event of a fault is currently still rarely researched. In this paper a control concept is introduced, that enables a WF to keep robust power reserves and to support it for instantaneous, primary and secondary power control. On the basis of a simulation study, advantages of this approach in terms of grid support, reduction of aerodynamic couplings and reduction of thrust forces are shown. The provision of reserves in the event of wind rotation and the dynamical supply in grid faults are also investigated. For the simulation a holistic model with aerodynamic wind field, wind rotor and drive train emulation as well as separation of WT and management area is used. Furthermore, approaches are given for the transfer to a market-ready overall solution.
