Influence of Aerodynamic Couplings on the Support of Reserve Power with Wind Farms

The transformation of the European grid from conventional to climate neutrality, leads to power converter dominated grids with changed requirements for grid stability. Especially wind farms have to contribute to grid support and grid building due to their high percentage on the total energy supply. While the provision of the required reserve power for stand-alone turbines by pitching or increasing the speed has been widely researched, there is a need for further investigations regarding the supply in wind farms due to the aerodynamic couplings. In this paper, requirements of the future grid are explained and the influence of wind speed changes caused by the reserve operation point are investigated. In this context, new definitions of sum-MPP and global-MPP are introduced. On the basis of simulation studies with dynamical wind turbine and wind emulation, advantages and disadvantages of the reserve strategies in a wind farm are discussed. The dynamic performance of inertia, primary and secondary power supply is investigated in terms of robustness and component stress.
