Spiral Microchannels with Inertial Microfluidics for Enhanced Hemodialysis Ultrafiltration

In this study, we investigate the potential of spiral microchannels with inertial microfluidics for improving hemodialysis ultrafiltration. We demonstrate that the combination of spiral microchannels and inertial microfluidics provides enhanced separation of blood components, particularly removing excess fluid from the blood during hemodialysis treatment. Our experiments reveal that using inertial microfluidics in spiral microchannels increases shear stress and enhances lateral migration of red blood cells, leading to improved filtration performance. The spiral geometry also increases surface area, further enhancing blood component separation. Our results suggest that using spiral microchannels with inertial microfluidics could offer a promising alternative for improving hemodialysis ultrafiltration and provide a platform for developing more efficient blood filtration systems.
