Ocular Pressure Sensing for Smart Health: Recent Developments, Challenges, and Future Directions

Ocular pressure sensing presents a unique challenge as the eye is highly sensitive and specialized area. Frequent ocular pressure monitoring outside of a clinic setting would benefit patients and doctors in tracking the progress of disease and aid in preventing worsening conditions. Technology has only recently become small and flexible enough to make progress in this area. This study conducted a systematic literature review to gain insight from recently published articles covering the most recent developments, within the past five years, in detention method improvements coupled with power sources and transmission of the data. Trusted data sources were used (IEEE Xplore, AMC digital library, PubMed, ScienceDirect) with keyword searches and criteria to find the most used materials and techniques being developed, and which novel techniques show the most promise. The review study found electrical circuits consisting of a resistor, an inductor, and a capacitor (RLC circuits) using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the most common technique and material, with both RLC circuits and two externally scanned methods with strong linear correlation.
