Physical-Based Verification of High-Speed Channel Crosstalk and Correlation with BER Measurements

Over a hundred high-speed SerDes channels have been implemented in advanced IC package designs. Channel-to-channel crosstalk noise, particularly, is one of the critical issues due to the high-density channel routing in advanced packages. In traditional methodology, electromagnetic (EM) simulation is employed to accurately capture crosstalk models for verifying the quality of channel-to-channel crosstalk. Nevertheless, this verification process based on EM simulation demands a considerable amount of time, potentially impacting package design and sign-off cycle time. This paper introduces a new physical-based methodology for channel crosstalk verification. With this approach, over a hundred SerDes channels can be successfully verified within an hour, even in a large 70 mm × 70 mm package design. Moreover, the proposed methodology consistently correlates with EM simulation and channel bit-error-rate (BER) measurements. This approach proves to be an effective means of ensuring package design quality while enhancing the efficiency of the design cycle.
