Generalized Steady-State Behavior Model for DC Wind Turbine Power and Speed Control

Wind energy has been the subject of substantial research in pursuit of renewable energy solutions. System optimization in a wind turbine requires careful control to protect mechanical elements and maximize the power delivered to an electrical load. This paper gives step-by-step procedure for modelling the steady-state behavior of DC wind turbine. Principles of the mechanical and electrical systems at play in the process of energy capture are described, and a succinct formula is derived which predicts both turbine rotational speed and the electrical power delivered to any load at any wind speed. The simplicity of this formula makes it easy to use when designing a control system to optimize power output and control the rotational speed of a turbine.
