A Vector-Power Synchronization Control for Grid-Forming Voltage-Source Converters With Enhanced Performance Under Wide SCR Condition

The power-synchronization control (PSC) is proven to be an emerging solution for integrating the power converters into the grid, which has attracted wide attention due to its independence on the phase-locked loop (PLL). Compared to the traditional vector-current control (VCC), the PSC has two obvious shortcomings: 1) relatively serious coupling between active and reactive power control, and 2) the control loop includes two conjugate poles at fundamental frequency, which makes it difficult to operate under strong AC system condition. These two characteristics might weaken the robustness of the PSC and lead to instability issues in some special cases. Therefore, this paper tries to propose a new generation grid-forming (GFM) scheme named vector-power synchronization control (VPSC) by integrating the advantages of the VCC and PSC. First, the plants of the VCC and PSC are revisited and the relationship between them is built. Subsequently, the vector-power synchronization controller and its design are proposed by comparing the difference and similarity between the VCC and PSC. Multiple electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation cases are designed and carried out in MATLAB/Simulink for validating the proposed method.
