Enhancing Realism and Creativity in Video/Filmmaking Utilising Photogrammetry Assets in CGI Environments

The film and gaming industries have evolved in technology, particularly the transformative influence of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) on the creation of immersive digital environments. Traditional methods of filming environments are encumbered by issues of time, cost, and the limitations of location availability. Recently, photogrammetry has emerged as an innovative technique, revolutionising the creation of realistic CGI environments. This approach enables the capture of real-world intricacies and textures that were previously challenging to replicate via conventional means. The advent of Unreal Engine 5 has further harnessed photogrammetry’s potential in CGI environment creation, introducing features like Lumen and Nanite that empower artists to craft photorealistic environments with unparalleled levels of detail and realism.The primary objective of this research is to explore the feasibility and prospective applications of employing photogrammetry assets in CGI environment construction. Specifically, the study investigates the use of Quixel, a repository of photogrammetry assets. Moreover, this study endeavours to provide an insightful analysis of the merits and limitations of employing photogrammetry assets in CGI environment creation when contrasted with traditional filming techniques. Furthermore, this research contributes to the existing knowledge base within the domains of film, setting the stage for future research endeavours related to the application of photogrammetry assets in the creation of CGI environments.
